A Quick Guide to the Common Surgeries Performed on Pets
While you always wish for your pets to have healthy and happy lives, sometimes it becomes necessary to intervene medically. Various conditions may call for surgical procedures, ranging from those that are routine and preventative to others that are more complex and critical.

It’s important to note that surgeries, while they can be worrying, are often a crucial step toward a healthier life for your pet. This quick guide to the common surgeries performed on pets will equip you with the necessary knowledge to ensure you take the best care of your furry friends.

Spaying/Neutering

Spaying and neutering are surgical procedures performed to prevent pets from reproducing. In females, spaying is a surgery that involves the removal of the ovaries and uterus. This eliminates the heat cycles, preventing unwanted pregnancies and reducing the risk of certain health problems.

Neutering refers to the castration of male pets. The procedure involves removing the testicles, which results in decreased production of testosterone. This can significantly reduce aggressive behavior and the urge to roam, making pets less likely to run away or get into fights.

Dental Surgery

Dental surgery is a broad term involving various procedures to improve pets’ oral health. The need for such surgeries often arises from periodontal disease, a common condition amongst pets who don’t receive regular oral care. Periodontal disease begins with the formation of plaque and tartar, leading to inflammation that can result in severe complications like tooth loss or damage to internal organs.

Skin Mass Removal

Skin mass removal is a surgical procedure performed on pets to diagnose and treat abnormal growths. The process begins with a physical examination and possibly a fine needle aspiration, a non-invasive procedure used to collect cells from the mass. The size and location of the mass determine the extent of the surgery. Veterinarians may partially remove large masses to alleviate discomfort or to prevent further growth.

Orthopedic Surgery

Orthopedic surgery in pets primarily addresses disorders related to bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, and muscles. These conditions may arise due to trauma, developmental abnormalities, degenerative conditions, or congenital defects. Some of the most common orthopedic surgeries include procedures to treat fractures, hip dysplasia, cruciate ligament tears, and patellar luxation.

Foreign Body Removal

One of the most common surgeries performed on pets—especially young ones—is foreign body removal, which is the removal of a non-food item accidentally ingested by the pet. The degree of the problem depends on the size, shape, and type of foreign object, as well as the location of the obstruction in the digestive tract. These items commonly include toys, socks, stones, and even bones.

Sometimes, surgery is necessary and difficult to avoid; trusting reputable professionals to perform pet surgery can help you navigate your pets’ health with more confidence. After all, prevention is better than cure, and regular check-ups and prompt attention to any unusual symptoms can minimize the need for invasive surgical intervention.

I like that you mentioned how a variety of conditions might call for surgical procedures. We have a new pet right now, so I am trying to learn how to properly take care of pets, even during emergencies. Thankfully, pet surgical procedures are easy to get from vets now.
