Should You Vaccinate Your Dog Each Year?

When you want to avoid getting the flu, you get a flu shot at the start of the season. This helps introduce your body to the disease so that it knows how to fight it. However, because the flu evolves so rapidly, most people have to get a new shot every year to avoid getting sick again.

Because of this, and because we love our canine companions, it may make you wonder: should you vaccinate your dog each year as well?

The Purpose of Vaccinations for Dogs

If you’ve adopted a new dog, you’ve likely brushed up against the question of vaccinations. Puppies are legally required to be vaccinated against rabies, but there are a number of other illnesses that owners can also vaccinate their dogs against, such as:

  • Kennel cough
  • Canine influenza
  • Coronavirus
  • Hepatitis
  • Canine distemper
  • Lyme disease
  • Parvovirus

As with humans, these shots help your dog build up an immunity to these illnesses.

Do Dogs Need Yearly Vaccinations?

The immunity we get from vaccination is not always indefinite, even when an illness doesn’t mutate as much as the flu. Eventually, antibodies run out in the system, hence why we need booster shots. However, veterinarians now agree that our dog’s immunity against canine illness lasts longer than a year. Therefore, shots do not need to be given annually.

How Long Should You Go Between Booster Shots for Dogs?

You should get a booster shot one year after your dog’s initial round of vaccines. However, according to the vaccination guidelines provided by the World Small Animal Veterinary Association, you should only administer vaccines once every three years after the first round of boosters. Doing a booster more often may harm your dog.

If you aren’t sure whether your dog is due for a vaccination, don’t try to guess. Consulting your veterinarian is the best option to ensure your dog’s health and wellness. Our veterinarians in Palmdale, CA can provide all the essential vaccinations to help your dog thrive.

It is conceivable, but the amount of immunity against any of the avoidable illnesses must be determined by individual blood testing for antibody titers in order to identify when boosters may be required. If your dog's antibody titer is confirmed to be low, a booster vaccine will be required. Inoculation against a single illness may not be accessible at this time, and it will almost certainly cost as much as a multivalent vaccination that protects against numerous diseases. From your dog's perspective, one immunization against several common diseases is better to a series of specific disease shots.

Is it good to vaccinate your dog even when he still sounds healthy?

I appreciate that you explained that getting a shot for flu prevention could help you in advance. My cousin told me a couple of days ago that she was planning to have her pet vaccinated to prevent the unwanted virus and disease, and she asked if I had any idea what would be the best option to consider. Thanks to this instructive article, I'll be sure to tell her that she can consult a well-known pet hospital as they can provide more information about the process of vaccination.

Thank you for helping me to understand that you are required by the law to make sure that puppies are vaccinated against rabies. My neighbor's dog had puppies a couple of days ago, and I am planning on adopting one. I will have to make sure that I find a veterinarian that provides vaccinations for rabies.

Thank you for recommending that you obtain a booster dose one year after your dog's original round of vaccinations. My daughter obtained a puppy through adoption. I'll advise her to vaccinate her dog's puppy and follow up with a booster shot a year later.

It's great to know that the immunity of a dog against canine illnesses would able to last for more than a year. That means that getting a vaccine for my dog from reputable veterinary services means that my pet will be free from sicknesses in the long run. I will make sure that I will choose the right vet here in Shrewsbury, Pennsylvania now that I plan to get a dog in 2023.

It's great to know that our pets immunity against illnesses has been found to actually last for more than a year. That is great, because it means that we only gett our dog vaccinated at a veterinary hospital service at least once a year. It's our first time to have a dog which is why we have to learn the necessary things we need for it to be healthy as it grows.

I like that you said that vaccination is a disease sample for your body to familiarize the feeling. A few nights ago, my sister informed me she planned to have her pet vaccinated to prevent undesirable viruses and diseases. She asked if I had thoughts on the best option to consider. I'll tell her she can consult a well-known veterinary hospital as they can provide more details about the process of vaccination. I love this enlightening article.
