Tips for Transporting an Injured Pet in an Emergency

No pet owner wants to think about their beloved pet getting injured, but it’s better to be prepared than caught off guard. If your dog or cat needs to visit the emergency hospital, you’ll be responsible for getting them there safely. Follow these tips for transporting an injured pet in an emergency.

Stay Calm

When the unthinkable happens, it’s hard not to feel anxious and alarmed, but try to stay calm for your pet’s sake. Dogs and cats can sense when their owners are upset, and it only makes them feel more scared. Talk to your pets calmly, even if they show signs of being scared or anxious.

Restrict Movement

While transporting your injured pet in an emergency, try to move them as little as possible. If your pet won’t stay still or leave their injury alone, you may need to use restraints. Towels make for humane and readily available restraints when you need to swaddle your pet or prevent them from moving around in a carrier.

Be Prepared To Muzzle

If you own a dog, it’s best practice to have a muzzle available in your pet first aid kit. Sometimes, dogs will bite their owners when they are anxious or scared, even if they’ve never shown signs of aggression before. If this happens, continue to talk to your pet in a calm voice, and don’t be afraid to muzzle them for their safety and yours.

Moving Large Dogs

If you own a large dog and their injury prevents them from moving, you may need to fashion a homemade stretcher to get them into your vehicle. Any kind of wooden board, ironing board, or another flat surface can serve as a stretcher in a pinch. Use gauze to tie your pet down if necessary.

Don’t Forget To Call Ahead

While you’re on the way, make sure to call the emergency hospital and let them know that you’re going to be arriving shortly. This makes sure that your pet receives attention as quickly and efficiently as possible, which can be crucial for their recovery.
