Why Early Recognition of Canine Osteoarthritis Is Important

Osteoarthritis is a common condition found in both dogs and cats, though it is more common in dogs, affecting about 25 percent of the population. Arthritis is a lifelong condition that affects joint function, though there are treatments that can mitigate the problem if applied early enough. Learn why early recognition of canine osteoarthritis is important.

What Is Osteoarthritis?

More commonly known as arthritis, osteoarthritis is a loss of cartilage between joints that can cause pain and limb dysfunction in dogs. It usually affects the elbows and hips and is more common in overweight dogs. Some breeds are also more likely to have arthritis due to a long history of poor breeding practices. These breeds include:

  • Spaniels
  • Rottweilers
  • German Shepherds
  • Golden Retrievers
  • Labradors

The Dangers of Overexercising

It’s important to know that overexercising your dog can lead to them developing arthritis. When dogs are young, their bones are still forming, and it’s possible for dogs to exert themselves too much at this stage. If you’re keen on training your dog to be athletic, be sure to have them exercise in short bursts rather than long sessions.

How Early Recognition Can Help

What few dog owners realize is that dogs are very good at hiding their pain until it’s too difficult for them to bear. When a dog does show signs of extreme distress, it’s very likely that their arthritis has already negatively impacted their quality of life. Possible signs of arthritis include:

  • Excessive licking of joints
  • Slower, limping walk
  • Increased cold sensitivity
  • Shrinking away from touch

If you can recognize canine osteoarthritis early, your vet can initiate a treatment plan to alleviate symptoms and prevent further distress to your pet’s joints. Some of these include injections at the site that help cushion the joint and allow it to operate normally.
